It was that year, 1984, when I read the rave reviews from the New York Times Book Review that led me to read Love Medicine. ![]() Thirty-five years ago, reading the weekly New York Times Book Review during my book clerk days at Stacey’s Bookstore, San Francisco, was a frequent and favorite pastime. ![]()

I sure enjoy creating images for a Mary Russell tale, just as much as I enjoy reading a Mary Russell tale. The island leads us up and into a branch, the bamboo stalk brings the eye down and then across through teapot, star and chop sticks. Then, the magic happened when Robert took my drawing and beautifully designed a map that fit nicely into the banner. I chose pencil for the cherry tree in blossom, for a muted feel. I used pen ink to create the map’s scene. Finally, a few iconic Japanese images~chop sticks, tea pot, bamboo, a koi fish and fan. A weapon for Mary to use~a throwing star. Two pilgrims, walking toward a Shinto temple. I ask about the storyline, to get an idea of what imagery might be important. Laurie sends along a few photos of items that I can choose to include. For this map, I was happy to know that Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes were heading for Japan. I know something interesting is in the air. This gives it more of an eery vibe, seeing as how its based on a true story reflects a kind of documentary. Apparently, this story was inspired by the confession of William Burke who was a murdered and procurer of corpses. This story is based around an immoral theme, highlighting the gothic era it was written in by Stevenson. The narrator begins to lose these emotions he has for this wrongful business and become voluntarily, completely devoted to its success. The narrator was surprised and appauled by this, but Macfarlane eventually persuades him into “manning up” and getting on with their business. ![]() The story goes on to describe that Macfarlane had murdered their friend, Gray, in order to receive the money. As the narrator describes, the bodies were thought to be naturally deceased, however, the narrator realizes when a well known woman’s dead body was brought to them, these bodies were illegal and wrongfully murdered for the money. The narrator described two men, Macfarlane and Fettes, as parters in a sketchy business for paying to get dead bodies to dissect in their classroom.
